book recommendation from Courtney

My mother-in-law, who is second only to Kristie in number of books read per year, sent me a copy of Francine Prose's Reading Like a Writer: a guide for people who love books and for those who want to write them (isn't her last name just perfect?). I'm only a few chapters in, but I've really been enjoying it -- and I'm using a three-paragraph cutting from her first chapter, titled (can you believe it?) "Close Reading," on Monday with my kids. If you can locate a copy, I'd highly recommend it; I'd also be willing to share my copy around the department if you're interested. (p.s. this counts as professional development hours, right? Reading something related to your curriculum?)
